Inspiration: Music Used in Teen Drama Trailers

Song Inspiration

Howlin’ for You – The Black Keys

The song is mainly composed of a drumbeat and guitar. The drum beat represents a heartbeat with the regular intervals. The speed of the song slowly increases, creating an increase in suspense and tension. The song is quite fast paced so I can imagine similar editing techniques used with this song. The editing technique that I would use, would be using short clips with small intervals in (black or white flashes depending on the lighting used in the shot), so the clips looked jumpy but continued with match on action.
The lyrics of the song that stand out are:
“I can’t explain any of these thoughts racing through my brain”.
I believe it could be the main idea for a storyline. If we were to go with a teen drama film trailer, it could work well with documenting social and moral issues related to teenagers i.e. drinking, drugs, depression and self-harm.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World – Lorde (Cover)

This song is a cover of the song by Tears for Fears. It is a lot slower than the original and highlights the meaning of the lyrics in more of a serious way. The band described the meaning of the song as “the quest for power, and how it can have unfortunate consequences”. This is shown in the lyrics:
“Welcome to your life; there's no turning back”.
The song mainly consists of piano and bass, although there is a heavy drum beat in the pre-chorus which splits the song and creates a more powerful lead up to the chorus.

Due to the speed of the song and meaning behind the lyrics, I can imagine the editing being a lot slower, with longer clips and fewer jump cuts. I also think that a grayscale filter will suit the song as it would add more tension and create a more sophisticated look – which this song would be good for.

Midnight Kiss – The Propellers

The main component of this song that I got inspiration from was the drum beat. It is quite fast paced and adds to the growing tension. There is an electronic instrumental after every chorus which is very different to the style of the rest of the song – this splits the song and separates the verses. The bridge of the song builds further tension because the same lyric Don't say, you'll stay, you'll get drunk and walk away” is repeated multiple times, increasing in speed and volume.
The lyrics tell a story of a teenage girl rebelling against society, this is relevant for a teen drama and the genre is also suited. The main influential lyric is:
“Smoking roll-ups and drinking heavy,
So when the boys see you,
They think you're really edgy.”
The lyrics highlight some common stereotypes of teenage girls – taking or dealing drugs, drinking alcohol in excess and trying to attract boys. There are two ways that this song could be used in a teen drama. The first is using it as a contrast to the clips or storyline. The song is about rebelling, so the song could be used on a clip of a teenage girl graduating or achieving something, therefore making it contrapuntal to the visual image.
The second way of using this song is by pairing it with clips showing what the lyrics are saying. I have drawn a storyboard below. The editing in the sequence would be slow and all of the clips would be handheld, this would add to the effect of the clips highlighting the characters being in a rush.

Dancing Shoes – Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys are an English rock band, this song specifically is more included in the punk rock genre. The song is described as being about a boy going out and seeing a girl that he likes, but being too shy to make a move.
The song is mainly guitar and drums, which increase in speed until the bridge. The bridge of the song is drums and vocal without the guitar which slows the song to the beginning speed. This song, like Howlin’ for You, has lyrics that stand out, and could be used as the plot of the trailer, or at least a small part of the trailer.
“The lights are flashing… exchange a glance but keep pretending to dance”.
I drew up parts of a storyboard of a scene that could be used for this song. All of the clips would have:
  • A blue filter
  • Flashing lights
  • slow motion effect
  • a lot of people in the shot or background
  • People dancing, talking and drinking
